BIRD: The Blackbird
I only log birds spotted in our own garden and orchard. See the column on the left hand side to see how many I have spotted so far.
We have a few blackbirds in different parts of the garden. They are fiercely territorial birds and once we are in the house, you can see them fly onto gates and fences, sing heartily and raise their tails. During the day they like to hop around the lawn hunting for worms.
(male blackbird)
Their song is one of the most beautiful in the bird world and often draws on the calls of other birds (and in cities the sound of alarms and sirens). They are the national bird of Sweden, give their name to the country Kosovo (Kos being blackbird in Serbian) and have been used in folklore in England since ancient times.
(female blackbird)
There was in medieval England a habit of putting blackbirds in a large ceremonial pies before they were served, which led to the famous nursery rhyme reference.
